An Ancient Temple
Kaviyoor Mahadeva temple, locally known as the Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is a sacred shrine in the South Kerala. It is among the oldest temples in the state that draws people with its eye-catching architecture. Dates back to the 10th century, the presiding deities of this shrine are Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Hanuman. It is believed that Lord Rama himself installed the Shivlinga of this temple during his returning journey to Ayodya after defeating Ravana. Nestled on a hillock, the main attraction of this temple is its Pallava style architecture. A Temple With Historical Significance
Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple has great historical value. So, it is preserved by the Archaeological Department as a monument. Historians have the conclusion that this temple dates back to a period as early as the 8th century because of its unique Pallava style of architecture. The main deity, Lord Shiva represented in the ‘Shivelinga’ form. Carved out of rock, this idol has about 3 feet high which enshrined in a square cave. Hanuman Temple
There is a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman also in the Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple. This temple is the most prominent Hanuman temple not only in Kerala but in the South India. It is believed that Lord Rama installed the idol of this temple in the presence of Goddess Sita, Lakshman, Hanuman, Sugreeva and Vibheeshana while he was on his return journey after fourteen years of exile. This temple is believed to be situated in Kaviyoor for more than 1000 years belongs to the oldest period of structural temples. Vadamaala and Aval Panthirunazhi are the main offerings to Lord Hanuman in this temple. Advance booking is required for these offerings but you can get small packets of aval nivedyam any time from the counter.

This temple is well-connected by road and you can catch direct buses from Pathanamthitta, Kozhencherry, Thiruvalla, Thottabhagom and Ranni.
