Kanan Pendari zoological garden is situated 9 K.M. away from Bilaspur on SH-07 Jabalpur road. This area is spread over 114 hectares. The topography of area is mainly plain and gentle slope.
It was used as nursery of forest department in 1975. It was converted to wild animal rescue center in which deer, bear and other animals were kept. As centre started attracting people it was developed as breeding centre for cheetal. In 1997 a Small zoo was created with a facility of rescue centre.
This centre was managed by bilaspur forest division. Slowly the centre grown as a zoo. In 2002 central zoo authority of india decided to grant recognition to kanan pendari zoological garden bilaspur as mini zoo for the period up to 2008. In 2008 C.Z.A. recognized kanan pendari as small zoo.
Budget and staff posting was regulated by Chhattisgarh state forest department.
The vegetation in Kanan Pendari zoological garden has mixed forest type- classified as northern peninsular dry deciduous mixed forest. The density is 0.4 in zoo area. Apart from natural vegetation, artificial plantation has also been taken place. Therefore, the density is improving.
