The Asiatic Lion once used to prowl from Persia, Egypt, Baluchistan, Sindh in west to Bengal in east, and from Rampur and Rohilkhand in north to River Narmada in south. In Mughal period, Asiatic Lions were abundant in forest ranges of Shivalik and Aravali ranges. Due to burst in human population, human – wildlife frictions, exploitation of forests and hunting, the entire population of lions have eloped from this region.
Presently, a small number of Asiatic lions are confined to the Gir forest of Gujarat. The Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) is also known as the Indian Lion. In the year 1990-91, to bring back the old reputation of the Yamuna River watershed area, Fisher Forest located on the outskirts of Etawah city on the banks of river Yamuna was considered suitable for lion excursion and Lion Safari Park. In the year 2012-13, the scheme of Lion Breeding Center and Multiple Safari Park in 350 ha. of Fisher Forest area of Etawah district has been started by obtaining permission from Central Zoo Authority and Ministry of Forest Government of India.
This subgenre of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) has been listed by IUCN as endangered. Inspired by the glorious backdrop of the Babbar lion, the Etawah Fisher Forest area along the banks of the Yamuna River was considered suitable for lion excursion and Lion Safari Park, to bring back the old reputation of the Yamuna River watershed forest area.
